Visually, it reminds me a bit of Dexed, which is another free synth we’ll look at a bit later. If you’re anything like me, you will let out a squeal of delight when you first try it. It features the same drag-and-drop modulation you are used to with other synths, but I noticed it lets you “preview” modulation choices before you make them.īasically what this means is as you drag a modulation source over a destination, you hear the change it makes before you release the mouse. It looks awesome and has a ton of cool design hacks that come in handy when you’re making sounds. You’ll find a whole range of new possibilities inside Vital – we’d be here all day if we listed all the cool stuff it can do. It has some really cool warp modes for the wavetables that can be quite radically different to those in Serum. I sometimes found it hard to do this in Vital and I felt that I had a bit less control over the sound where I really needed it.īut still, Vital has some seriously innovative features that I’d have no problem paying for if I had to.
This means you can elegantly balance the gain structure inside the patch. With Serum, each effect slot has an output volume control (just click the “Mix” label on the effect if you don’t see this). One thing I will say about Vital is that gain staging is difficult at least when it comes to the onboard effects. I tried pushing it hard in terms of playing really high notes, cranking filter resonance, adding distortion, etc and it never sounded unpleasant or harsh. In terms of sound, it’s much better than anyone could hope for in a free VST.
But the actual synth you get with the paid options seems to be identical to the free one – it just comes loaded with more wavetables and presets. They have created a model that encourages users to pay for extra presets and wavetables. The Vital Audio team aren’t going entirely penniless, however. Again, I will remind you because it’s hard to believe – this synth is totally free! Personally, I always thought that one filter was not enough for a synth like Serum so I’m really grateful that Vital delivers here. It has three wavetable oscillators and two filters instead of just one. Not only this but it actually boasts some major advantages over Serum. I think most would agree that this is the first free VST synth that can rival Serum in terms of its look and features. (Download Vital here.)
